GenuTax is a free-to-use tax software that helps Canadians prepare and file their tax return. To start, the platform has you complete a comprehensive interview that takes you through your current tax situation. This process helps you claim every available tax deduction and credit. You can also select a simplified version of the interview. Most tax situations are handled by GenuTax, including capital gains, retirement income, and small business income. In addition to filing your current tax return, GenuTax lets you file tax returns from previous years (e.g., 2003-2021). Up to 20 different tax returns can be filed without any income level limitations. The ReFile feature lets you edit a tax return you already filed and resubmit it directly to the CRA over the Internet. As of May 1, 2023, ReFile is available for 2019-2022 tax returns. The Express NOA feature lets you view your notice of assessment immediately after you file.
As mentioned above, GenuTax is a completely free tax return software. GenuTax does encourage donations as they help with operational costs, e.g., regularly updating the source code. You can donate any amount you like, and it is entirely optional.

GenuTax is an accurate tax return software that gives you a better understanding of your tax return. The software is intuitive and easy to use. GenuTax is also one of the most affordable tax return solutions in Canada.
Compared with other tax return software, GenuTax looks and feels outdated. The interface resembles a computer program from the late 1990s or early 2000s. And the platform is missing some features that are common to other tax return software (e.g., keyword search and assistance from tax experts). GenuTax is only available for Windows users. Mac users have to find a different option.
