Hemingway Reviews and Product Details

Hemingway is a writing assistant program that aims to improve your clarity and conciseness of your writing. While Hemingway is available as a browser application, you can also download Hemingway 3 as a desktop app for MacOSX and Windows with improved functionality. While not as comprehensive as some of the other applications, Hemingway is intuitive at correcting your writing and highlights exactly where you went wrong with a colour-coded highlighter.

Hemingway reviews

Pros

  • Simple interface: Type your sentences into the application and Hemingway will instantly analyze your writing for what it’s programmed to check for. It’s fast, easy to use, and colourful.
  • Truly free on desktop: Hemingway’s browser application is free to use, without requiring any information before you start editing your work. However, the paid-desktop version does not seem to provide many improvements over the browser application.

Cons

  • Basic assistance: There are 4 things that Hemingway checks: use of adverbs, use of passive voice,  phrases that have simpler alternatives, and difficulty in reading a sentence. However, there are times and places for adverbs, passive voice, complex word usage and longer sentences.  What there is no place for in writing is grammatical and syntactical mistakes, which Hemingway cannot detect.
  • Underestimates readability: In our experience, many complex sentences will get flagged by the software, despite being completely readable. Whenever I write a review on writing assistant software, I plug my writing back into the software to check not only my work, but the efficacy of the software. According to Hemingway, almost all the sentences written in this article are hard to read at minimum, and the majority are very hard to read. While I have avoided short, simple sentences purposefully, this highlights how ineffective Hemingway will be for higher-level writing, like helping University students with their essays.
